The bergamot is a citrus plant that was created as a cross between the bitter orange and other citrus plants and was first described in the 17th century. It is grown primarily in Calabria in Italy and its extracts give Earl Gray tea its characteristic aroma. The essential oils of bergamot are used in perfume production and aromatherapy.
What most don't know is that bergamot is also very rich in polyphenols, which, like the essential oils of this plant, have a variety of health benefits and also have strong antioxidant properties (1).
How can Citrus Bergamot improve the health of your cardiovascular system and reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases such as heart attacks and strokes?
Citrus Bergamot from GN Laboratories can improve cholesterol and blood lipid levels. High cholesterol and blood lipid levels are one of the primary risk factors for cardiovascular disease. This can affect not only people who live unhealthily, but also bodybuilders who consume too much saturated fats with their diet.
High levels of the harmful LDL cholesterol promote deposits in the blood vessels, which can lead to constrictions or occlusions and are the primary trigger for a heart attack. Healthy HDL cholesterol counteracts such deposits by promoting the removal of LDL cholesterol.
Scientific studies have shown that citrus bergamot can lower harmful LDL cholesterol levels by 24 to 36%, while it can increase healthy HDL cholesterol levels by 22 to 40% (2, 3, 4, 5). In addition to this, a significant reduction in the triglyceride level in the blood was also observed. In contrast to statins, which are used in the medical field as a cholesterol-lowering agent, Citrus Bergamot does not inhibit the body's own production of coenzyme Q10, which is important for the energy metabolism.
In addition, Citrus Bergamot acts as an effective antioxidant that can counteract the oxidation of LDL cholesterol (1). This is of particular interest, as oxidized LDL cholesterol contributes to plaque formation in the blood vessels (i.e. calcification of the veins) much more than intact LDL cholesterol.
Citrus bergamot can help keep blood vessels healthy
Chronic systemic inflammation is widespread and has been associated with an increased risk of many diseases, including cardiovascular disease. Particularly critical in this respect is the inner lining of the veins known as edothelium, which is directly involved in the widening of the veins, the regulation of blood pressure, blood clotting and many other important processes. Inflammation in the area of the endothelium makes the veins more susceptible to the formation of harmful plaques, which ultimately can narrow and block the veins.
It has been shown that citrus bergamot can reduce inflammation and plaque formation and improve the elasticity and responsiveness of the veins. This is due, among other things, to its pronounced anti-inflammatory properties, which come about through a reduction in the levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines (6, 7, 8).
In addition, it has been shown that citrus bergamot can protect the cells of the endothelium through its antioxidant properties from damage by free radicals, which promotes the health of the endothelium and thus also the blood vessels (9, 10).
Citrus bergamot can improve insulin sensitivity and glucose tolerance
Scientific studies have shown that citrus bergamot can improve insulin sensitivity by activating AMPK, which resulted in a significant reduction in blood sugar levels (11). In the longer term, improved insulin sensitivity and lower blood sugar levels mean a significant reduction in the risk of diabetes - and thus also the risk of cardiovascular diseases, since diabetes is an important risk factor for these diseases
Other potential benefits of Citrus Bergamot
Citrus Bergamot has a number of other potential health benefits that are currently still under research. These include a potential weight reduction (12), a potential improvement in cognitive function (13) and a potential increase in bone volume (14).
